Your Acupuncture Schooling Is Useless, UNLESS...

Let me give you a bit of hard truth, all the acupuncture schooling you've had, all the hours of studying you've done, all the certifications you've passed is useless...

UNLESS...

You can reach the people who need your help and build a sustainable business.

By now, I hope you don't believe the fairy tale of "If you build it, they will come." This was a beautiful quote popularized by Kevin Costner in the movie Field of Dreams. And many business "gurus" started using it, but the reality is, that it's all bullshit when it comes to building a business.

The other hard truth is that there's no patented formula for success. If there were, everyone would be rich and successful.

HUSTLE

In business, it's a constant HUSTLE! You've got to be constantly looking for new patients and opportunities.

Opportunities come in many forms and you have to be ready! As a recent example, it [opportunity] could be sitting in a sauna at the gym, when your water bottle falls, sparking a conversation and leading to the mention of an acupuncture opening at Apple.

Sometimes it's as if the Universe is helping you!

And, while some success in business is, in part, due to good luck and fortune, there are certain things you can do to increase your odds in the game.

Copywriting

In the words of Joseph Sugarman (the copywriting genius), the goal of copywriting is "To cause a person to exchange his or her hard-earned money for a product or service."

There are many benefits of writing effective copy, to name a few:

  • Increase Trust and Exposure
  • Establish You as an Expert
  • Higher SEO Ranking
  • Better Advertising Conversion
  • Ultimately, More Success & Money

The Boron Letters

Ok, so now, you want to learn about copywriting, but where do you start? This is where The Boron Letters come in.

The Boron Letters are a series of letters by Gary Halbert (The Godfather of Copy) written to his son, teaching him about business and copywriting. The read is easy and entertaining and PACKED full of information!

My suggestion to you is to download the FREE pdf, print them and read them! You MUST print them, I cannot stress that enough.

The reason you need to print them is that there's something about having them physically in your presence and always calling you to read them to make you actually do it!

Are Acupuncture Schools Failing Their Students?

This post is going to be a bit controversial. And, at first, I hesitated to write it, but I feel strongly about the subject and think it warrants some discussion.

By now, I've interviewed and demo'd to hundreds of acupuncturists. And through that process, you start hearing some reoccurring stories. And some are disturbing!

One of these reoccurring themes is that acupuncture schools are inadequately preparing their students for post graduation and starting their own practice. I constantly hear this from both recent grads and more established practitioners.

Pile of Debt

One thing I hear is that acupuncture schools are selling students a false sense of the ease of recouping the money they take out in loans for education. And so, students are graduating with a pile of debt without a clear path to repaying that debt.

In turn, many practitioners are moonlighting as acupuncturists, meaning they have a primary job (not acupuncture) and then, after hours, they're trying to get their practice going. To me, this seems like a very difficult way of starting a practice.

Not all Business

Another criticism I hear is that the business curriculum at acupuncture schools is inadequate in preparing the graduate for private practice and building a sustainable business. And, it sounds like, acupuncture students are given one business class which covers topics at a very high level. One business class!

While I understand that not all businesses succeed and that building a successful business and practice is in large part due to the work ethic and desire of the practitioner and business owner.

However, it also seems like it would be in the benefit of the acupuncture schools and the community to come up with a more worn path to success.

Thoughts?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Please leave a comment below or email me directly. And, maybe, through dialog and discussion, we can come up with a better understanding of what it takes to create a successful practice!
