How Acupuncturists Can Use Meetup.com For Fun and Profit!

As an acupuncturist and business person, not only do you treat and care for your patients, you also need to bring new patients in the door.

One of the mantras of business is to "go where your customers are."

Instead of sitting around and waiting for patients to call, being proactive with your marketing can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful practice.

An underutilized tool for finding new patients is Meetup.com. That's right, the online tool for like minded people to meet each other and connect.

Here's how to can use Meetup.com for your practice!

Go to the Meetup.com website.

The first step is to make your way to the Meetup.com website! Just click on the link below!

Select your location

Next, click on the location link and enter your city or zip code.

Search for a meetup

In the search box, enter a search term for a meetup you're interested in and with people who might be interested in your practice.

I would start with some of your own interests. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • health
  • fitness
  • mindfulness
  • meditation
  • herbalism
  • medicine

Signup for a meetup

Once you've chosen a meetup group, join the group and signup to go to your first meetup! Exciting!

Go to a meetup

Going to your first meetup is fun and exciting. You'll get to meet new people and learn new things.

Make connecting with people your primary focus of your first few meetings. Feel the meetup out before making any business introductions, but don't be opposed to it if the opportunity arises!

Make time and effort to introduce yourself to the organizer(s) and thank them for putting together the meetup!

Present at a meetup

After a few meetups and you've gotten comfortable with the group of people, offer to present at a meetup. Meetup organizers are often short of presenters!

What Acupuncturists Need to Know About the CMS-1500

The CMS-1500 is the standard paper claim form used by all non-institutional medical providers (private practices, etc.) to bill Medicare, and is also, accepted by health insurance payers.

The forms are designed by both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC). The NUCC is part of the American Medical Association (AMA).

The forms are printed in special red ink so that they can be easily scanned and the data read by a computer.

The CMS-1500 is separated into a series of boxes to collect all the necessary information needed to submit an accurate claim.

The fields include payer information, insurance information, patient demographic information, ICD-10 codes, and dates of service.

Payer Info

The first box in the CMS-1500 is for identifying the payer. (ie. Medicare, Medicaid, insurance, etc.)

Insured Info

A grouping of boxes make up information about the insured, like the insured policy number, plan name, policy group and contact information.

Patient Info

Next, you have patient contact information and his/her relationship to the insured.

Diagnosis Codes

In box 21, is where you'll put the ICD-10 codes.

Treatment Codes

Next, you enter the dates of service, CPT codes and charges. As well as, associating the diagnosis code from above to each service.

Provider Info

In box 33, you have the provider information, including the provider NPI and the taxonomy code. The taxonomy code for an acupuncturist is 171100000X.

And, that's a quick run down of the CMS-1500.

Do You Scrub Your Acupuncture Insurance Claims?

Filing an acupuncture insurance claim can be a daunting task for an acupuncturists. Not many would argue that the CMS 1500 form is more functional rather than beautiful. Some might even call them aesthetically challenged!

One of the biggest problems with filing an insurance claim is that if there's a small mistake in the form, you don't get paid!

Claims can be denied by simple data entry errors or mismatched demographic information between the acupuncturist and insurance. These errors can be costly, taking weeks before being detected and longer to correct.

To help prevent this, Jasmine will run a scrub eligibility before submitting claims.

Scrub Eligibility

Scrub eligibility provides real time errors while creating a claim.

Jasmine will compare your claim's patient information with the coverage information the insurance has on their system.

If there's an error with the coverage information comparison, the claim will not be processed, giving you the ability to correct the errors.

This will reduce the number of denied claims and save you time and most of all MONEY!

Insurance billing is currently by private invite only. If you're an acupuncturist interested in insurance billing and would like to be the FIRST to use the new insurance billing features, sign up below!
